A discussion between four Karagoz Masters, attempting to reflect upon the various aspects of a Karagoz Master!s profession
Tacettin Dicker, 92 years old
Emin Senyer, 52 years old
Cengiz Ozek, 49 years old
Tacettin!s assistant, 33 years old
Emin: They always say that theater is society’s mirror and Karagoz is exactly that. In fact you see this curtain? In Karagoz jargon it is called a mirror.
Tacettin: The mission of Karagoz is to reflect the revolt of the people, to bring light on the peoples reactions.
Emin: The audience doesn’t go to Karagoz, Karagoz comes to the audience.
Cengiz: Our role is to voice the people’s thoughts.
Emin: I think Greek Karagoz is much more political but the same can’t be said for Turkish Karagoz.
Tacettin: Karagoz must dabble in people’s politics, not the politics of the rulers. Some foundations tell me to do politics but I do not see the point. I do not believe in politics.
Emin: I believe in absolute justice so in my Karagoz plays I cover justice a lot but I cover every type of justice, not just in the legal sense.
Tacettin: I reflect what the public says. What the public says is politics for me.
