Rien n’est jamais figé dans l’œuvre de Suchan Kinoshita. Son travail protéiforme se développe sans cesse et se transforme avec les expériences accumulées. L’artiste considère chaque exposition comme le fragment d’un tout dont elle ne contrôle ni les limites, ni l’aboutissement. Bien que reliées entre elles par la volonté et les désirs de l’artiste, les pièces dont elle est l’auteur s’enrichissent de connotations imprévues et peuvent se comprendre différemment selon les contextes spécifiques et le temps qui passe, un peu comme un message transmis par téléphone arabe arrive à destination en ne gardant qu’un vague écho de son sens d’origine, sans néanmoins en être totalement exempt.

Suchan Kinoshita utilise régulièrement des éléments d’installations antérieures mêlés à des objets trouvés ou fabriqués. L’espace à sa disposition devient un lieu de passages et de rencontres où chacun est invité à interpréter ses propres sensations et à réfléchir aux propositions offertes en se fondant sur ses références personnelles. L’artiste elle-même inscrit son travail dans une temporalité  toujours ouverte : chaque nouvelle proposition fait partie d’un cheminement initié il y a près de vingt ans et nous assistons, en direct, à son déroulement actuel.

Suchan Kinoshita est née en 1960 à Tokyo. Elle vit et travaille à Maastricht. Elle a étudié à la Musikhochschule à Cologne puis à la Jan van Eyck Academie à Maastricht. Elle a tout d’abord travaillé dans une compagnie de théâtre, en tant qu’actrice, metteur en scène et conceptrice de décors.

Cette expérience, ainsi que sa formation musicale, se retrouvent dans ses installations interdisciplinaires qui ont été exposées internationalement depuis la fin des années 1980, dans le cadre par exemple de la 4eme Biennale d’Istanbul (1995), la 11e Biennale de Sydney (1998), Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007) ou la 7eme Biennale de Shanghai (2008). Outre ces manifestations, des expositions monographiques significatives ont entre autres été présentées au White Cube, Londres, au Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris / ARC, au MHKA, Anvers, au MUDAM à Luxembourg et au Ludwig Museum, Cologne.

Elle a remporté le Prix de Rome en 1992. En 2010 le Ludwig Museum de Cologne et Suchan Kinoshita ont reçu le «Kunstpreis des Kuratoriums der Kunststoff-Industrie», ce qui a permis à l’artiste de réaliser son exposition monographique In 10 Minuten. (source Mudam)

Born and raised in Japan, Suchan Kinoshita was twenty years old when she went to Cologne to study music at the institute where the contemporary composer Maurizio Kagel teaches. Later, she worked for a theatre company where the members alternated the roles of actor, set builder and director. It is therefore not a coincidence that her work is always on the borderline: both inside and outside the walls of an exhibition space, with or without the public’s active participation, recognisable as an artwork or camouflaged. Kinoshita’s plastic works are a fusion of several art disciplines. Throughout her oeuvre, we can find elements from theatre and experimental music, two fields she was active in for quite some time. Duration (time) and the conscious approach to the spectator are two of the most important aspects in her creations.

According to Suchan Kinoshita, 'the notion of being an artist is so loaded with meaning, - says Suchan Kinoshita, - we’re sort of pretentious in a way. I prefer this notion of the musician, the worker, or the dancer. Being perhaps the director or the creator of the piece, but also the player.' In fact, she also wants to 'move the role of the public into a player,' and vice versa. Kinoshita proceeds beyond the penetration of visual arts by the theatre. She explores the borderlines between dreams, imagination, and reality. In her installations, she uses superimposition or the interplay between live-transmission, film projection, and framed realities, to experiment with different levels of reality.

Suchan Kinoshita was born in 1960 in Japan. She lives and works in Maastricht.  She first studied at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and went on to the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. Significant monographic exhibitions were presented, for example, at the White Cube, London, at the Museum of Modern Art City of Paris / ARC, at the M HKA, Antwerp and at the Ludwig Museum, Cologne. Suchan Kinoshita was the winner of the 1992 Prix de Rome.

In 2010 the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and Kinoshita received the “Kunstpreis des Kuratoriums der Kunststoff Industrie” (Fine Arts Prize of the Board of Trustees of the Plastics Industry). This prize made the solo exhibition In 10 Minuten possible.
